Summer In the City

A collection of events and gatherings as part of our "I Love South Side" Ministry.  Summer in the City offers many opportunities for LSC'ers to LISTEN, LEARN, and COLLABORATE in efforts to live out our vision and mission.  As a congregation, we will continue to serve our neighbors as we have over the years, but also begin the next steps to engage in our neighborhood in a deeper way.

Below you'll discover the many opportunities for you to get involved with Summer in the City!  Choose what fits your schedule AND what speaks to your gifting's and passions! (And please only sign up if you know you can commit! no "maybe's" please :) )

Keep checking back here as we will update throughout the summer.  You won't want to miss out on upcoming opportunities.

What do we mean by listen, Learn & collaborate?

The events and opportunities were planned with these three words in mind.  How can we LISTEN to what is going on in our neighborhood?  Can we hear God leading us or opening doors to improve engagement in our community?  What opportunities can we use to LEARN what it truly means to be a partner with our neighbors, to be engaged in their lives and begin to strategize what we can do to make a difference in our community?  Where can we COLLABORATE and build relationships with others, responding to felt needs in our surrounding neighborhoods that will continue to vitalize life on the south side of South Bend!

Use the color codings to see where each event/opportunity ties in

(of course, some will overlap all 3 areas, but these designate their main focus).

  • Prayer Walk @ Rum Village

    Monday, 6/3, 6:30PM

Join the prayer team to pray at Rum Village, a south side City Park and nature area, on the eve of SBVPA's Best. Week. Ever event.  The following day LSC will be part of the event and will have an opportunity to connect with and meet many of our south side neighbors and others from the area.  Meet us at the Rum Village playground parking area. Location: Ewing Ave @ Gertrude St. 46613

  • Volunteer for a shift as we invite those in attendance to "make a friend and meet your neighbors!"  Our interactive display will be a great conversation starter for us to get to know our neighbors and hopefully for many other's to meet.  We'll also offer a kid friendly scavenger hunt and face painting.  Location: Ewing Ave @ Gertrude St. 46613

  • LSC families are invited to join in on the ice cream party to celebrate the kick-off to summer.  It's a great time to meet other LSC families in a really casual environment.  You bring the bananas and we'll provide all the toppings for a family style banana split.

  • Prayer Walk and Sidewalk chalk

    Sunday, 6/9, 12:30-2:30pm

Stay after church and join the Prayer Team members as we head out to south side schools to pray and listen for God's voice in how we live out our vision in partnership with neighborhood schools.  Opportunity also to leave some inspiring words to students on their last week of school with a little sidewalk chalk.  We'll give you a snack before you head out and when you return we'll have pizza and a time to share your experience.

  • We're going to celebrate the students of Monroe on completing their school year.  Join us at 2:15pm and we'll walk over to Monroe and set up outside where the students exit.  As students bring their last day of school cheers out the door, we'll be there with noise makers, pom-poms, signs and cheers of congratulations to make it a day to remember for them.

  • We're taking a "field trip" to learn more from a South Bend organization that has been making positive impacts in their own neighborhood.  Neighborhood Networker, Andre Stoner, will take us on a guided walking tour and share the ways a group of people with common vision and goals can make a difference in community.  LSC wants to learn more and later hold conversations on how we can implement our own strategies for the very neighborhood God has places us.  Space is limited to 25 participants with the interest and passion to learn more about community development. Location: 1007 Portage Ave, 46616

  • We're inviting the neighborhood to show up and join us at a casual cook-out at Monroe School's park/playground.  We'll fire up the grill, feed the crowd and spend time in conversations with our neighbors.  We want to hear what they think about the neighborhood (good, bad, or ugly) and contemplate ways to empower, support, and partner with them to become active participants in strengthening the pride, beauty and diversity of the south side neighborhoods. Location: Monroe School Park, Corner of Donmoyer and Fellows, 46614

  • South Bend Cubs Game

    Tuesday, 7/2, 7:30pm game time

Let's take the family to a Cubs Game!  Get your tickets to join other LSC families for a night at the ball park - a great way to connect with other LSC'ers and maybe even make some new friends.  The cost is $10/person, which includes ticket to the game and $5 cubbie cash to spend at concessions or for a souvenir.  You can pick up your order envelope at the lobby welcome desk or use the LSC APP to secure your tickets.  Deadline to order is June 23rd.

  • EMBRACE SUMMER PROGRAM VOLUNTEER

    MONDAY-THURSDAY, 7/8-8/1, 10AM-2PM

It’s our second year partnering with Beacon and their summer program they offer to students at Monroe and Madison schools as part of their 5 year grant, focusing on students who have experienced childhood traumas.  LSC Volunteers (ages 16+) will assist program staff with fun actitives and experiences with a theme of “traveling the world.”  Volunteers can commit to one day, one week or the entire month.  This year’s program will be located at South Gate Church - another awesome south side church!

Location: South Gate Church, 3717 S. Michigan St., 46614

  • Go & See @ La Casa de amistad

    Wednesday, 7/10, 6:30-8pm

We're taking a "field trip" to learn more from another South Bend organization that has been making positive impacts in the lives of local hispanic adults and youth for decades.  Executive Director Sam Centellas will share more on how La Casa De Amistad functions as a community center but also serves neighbors, by helping people prepare successfully for the workforce and daily life in the community.  LSC wants to learn more and later hold conversations on how we can implement our own strategies for the very neighborhood God has placed us.  Space is limited to 25 participants with the interest and passion to learn more about community development.  Location: 746 S. Meade St., 46619

  • Another "field trip" - this time to the city's Civil Rights Heritage Center, a once segregated city swimming pool transformed into an active learning center.  From the tour and opportunity for discussions, we'll explore the civil rights struggles of the past with hopes that people can take action in the present and build a better future.  Some conversations are more difficult than others, but we have an opportunity to be guided in those conversations with Director, George Garner.  LSC wants to learn more and later hold conversations on how we can implement our own strategies for the very neighborhood God has placed us.  Space is limited to 25 participants with the interest and passion to learn more about community development. Location: 1040 W. Washington St, 46601

  • Prayer Walk @ LSC

    Friday, 7/26, 6:30pm

Join members of the Prayer Team as they spend time praying over the LSC property on the eve of our third annual Ready. Set. School!  Back-2-School event.  We want to invite God into this space and ask for his blessings for each child and family who will attend the event the following day.  We will pray for God to open doors of conversations among neighbors and community partners.  Following time in prayer we will spend a little time sharing things that God may have laid upon you during your time of prayer.

  • Ready. Set. School! Back-2-School event @LSC

    Saturday, 7/27, 10am-2pm

Our 3rd Back-2-school event is an opportunity for neighborhood families with kids in SBCSC to come by and experience a fun time, get some much needed "stuff" for the new school year, and also connect with local organizations offering services/goods that help support the needs of families.  We'll need a lot of support from our LSC family - nearly 100 volunteers, donations of school supplies, hygiene kit items and school uniforms to pull this off. Here's how you can help:

  • Healthlinc Mobile Unit

    Monday, 7/29, 9am-3pm

HealthLinc is a community health partner that has been building relationships on the south side and has supported Ready. Set. School! since the beginning.  The Mobile Unit, offering well-child visits and athletic physicals, will be on site at LSC for Ready. Set. School! and also the following Monday.  Volunteers are not needed for this visit, but we'd love to show our appreciation with a small spread of food while they are here.  If you love serving others with your generosity of cooking/baking this is a great opportunity for you.

  • We want to welcome teachers back to their classrooms with some treats and snacks as a simple way to celebrate and appreciate their commitments to another school year.  Volunteers are not needed for this visit, but we’d love to show our appreciation with a small spread of food at each school in addition to personalized cards/notes of appreciation.  If you love serving others with your generosity of cooking/baking this is a great opportunity for you.  Or if you have a way with words and love to send notes of appreciation, your talents are needed!
